APPLE plants yield 600,000 jobs in India by March !

The Apple ecosystem in India is expected to generate around 600,000 jobs by the end of the fiscal year. A significant portion of the workforce will be comprised of women, making up to 70% of the direct jobs created by Apple and its suppliers. The expansion of Apple's operations in India has led to the creation of over 165,000 direct jobs since the inception of the smartphone PLI scheme in 2020.

Furthermore, the government estimates that for every direct job in the electronics sector, three indirect jobs are generated, indicating the potential for further job creation. It is noteworthy that the Apple ecosystem has been able to achieve the target of creating 200,000 direct jobs within four years, surpassing the initial goal set for a five-year period under the smartphone PLI scheme.

Experts have highlighted that Apple has successfully replicated its model from China in India, resulting in the creation of a large-scale job ecosystem. Notably, Apple is the first global value chain (GVC) in India to shift a part of its supply chain from China. The company has already begun manufacturing iPhones in India, with production steadily increasing through its contract manufacturers.

Overall, the expansion of Apple's operations in India has not only brought economic advantages but has also significantly contributed to job creation in the country, with potential for further growth in the future.

Based on the recent Economic Survey, India is currently a significant contributor, accounting for about 14% of the US tech giant's total production. This establishes India as a crucial center for the company's global exports, marking a significant increase from the 7% contribution in FY23.

In Tamil Nadu, industry insiders predict that out of the 200,000 direct jobs, approximately 90,000 will originate from iPhone and component factories established by Foxconn and the Tatas. Tamil Nadu has emerged as a frontrunner in the electronics manufacturing sector. Notably, the state's chief minister MK Stalin recently inaugurated a massive industrial housing facility, constructed at a cost of Rs 706.5 crore. This complex will house around 18,720 primarily female workers employed at the Foxconn iPhone factory.

In addition to the housing complex in Sriperumbudur, Apple's suppliers and vendors are devising plans to construct housing complexes for their employees in various locations through a public-private partnership model. Most of these housing units are being developed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT). The Tata Group and SPR India are also involved in building homes for the workforce.

All' the best.
